Reviewing the New-Look Breitling Colt

Breitling revamped its entry-level Colt collection in 2014 with a firm nod to the original series, introduced in the 1980s.(like CITIZEN ECO DRIVE PROMASTER ) Like the Chronomat and the Navitimer, the Colt was conceived as a military watch, with an emphasis on reliability and readability. Its 24-hour scale, aviator-style dial and broad, unidirectional bezel have come to define the unmistakable look of Breitling watches. The new collection is true to the original right down to the movements. Most of the new models contain quartz calibers, which dominated the watch world at the time of the Colt’s debut. We tested the sole mechanical version, with an automatic ETA caliber. An ETA movement was also used in the original series.

The new Colt Automatic resembles the Colt Superocean, which debuted in the mid-1990s and remained in the collection for several years. The new Colt replicates the old model’s screwable crown with protectors on both sides, pilot-style Arabic numerals and a broad, unidirectional bezel with engraved notches and raised cursors at the quarter hours. These cursors improve the grip on the bezel, making it easy to rotate even when you’re wearing gloves. They have become a characteristic feature of Breitling watches.

On the new Colt, the markings are precisely engraved into the satin-finished bezel, which slopes gently downward toward its outer rim. The bezel clicks through 120 steps compared to the 60 notches on the bezel of the Colt Super-ocean, even though the additional steps aren’t necessary for to-the-minute setting of a dive’s start time. The new Colt Automatic also repeats the Superocean’s 24-hour scale and rare 1/100s-hour scale, described as an “aeronautic hundredths scale.”

The Colt Automatic’s 200-meter water resistance falls short of the earlier model’s 1,000-meter depth rating, but still offers plenty of water resistance for a divers’ watch. A sturdy, stainless-steel case with a doubly insulated back helps keep the watch intact in deep dives. The Professional III stainless-steel bracelet is equipped with a safety catch and a folding clasp that hinges open on one side. The bracelet, the Professional III, can be adjusted at the clasp or by removing screwed links at either end of the clasp. The watch can also be worn on a leather strap or on either an Ocean Racer or Diver Pro rubber strap.

Any of these would make the watch lighter than the 194 grams it weighs on a stainless-steel bracelet. (Despite being relatively heavy, the watch is quite comfortable to wear.) The leather strap is pleasantly supple, but its buckle seems a bit rickety.

In its guise as Breitling Caliber 17, the ETA 2824-2 in the new Colt is only moderately adorned, but has earned chronometer certification. The Colt’s average rate was almost entirely free of deviations when tested on our electronic timing machine with the mainspring fully wound and after running for 24 hours. On the wrist, the watch ran 1 second slow. This slight sluggishness persisted day after day, but the 1-second deviation falls within the chronometric tolerance range. Notably, there was a large difference between the rates with dial up and crown down after the watch had run for 24 hours. We also noted a difference in the amplitudes, which in the hanging positions declined by nearly 60 degrees within the span of one day. That is a large dip, but the average rate remained unaffected by the decrease and is commendable overall.

The dial shows everything the ETA Caliber 2824-2 has to offer, including hour, minute, sweep seconds hand and date, but the Colt can perform additional functions. Just inside the hour ring is another scale, calibrated from 13 to 24, recalling Breitling’s heritage as a maker of aviator watches and their standard 24-hour scales. On the flange at the perimeter of the dial there is a scale that divides an hour into 100 units. Each unit, 36 seconds long, is known as an “industrial” minute. This type of time measurement has various industrial applications, including denoting working hours. Three hours and 15 minutes, for example, would be expressed as 3.25 hours rather than as 3:15.

Minutes and seconds are indicated on a railroad-style track. The slim seconds hand, with an arrowhead tip, is the same length as the straight, faceted minutes hand. The tip of the hour hand extends just far enough to reach the inner edges of the hour indexes at 6 and 9 o’clock, which are larger than the rest. The hour and minutes hands, indexes and orientation point on the bezel all glow brightly green in the dark. The arrowhead tip on the seconds hand is skeletonized to allow this green glow to shine through when it sweeps over the luminous hour indexes.

he time is clearly legible thanks to the watch’s clear, minimalist styling and the nonreflective coating on both sides of the crystal. The pale hour markers and hands contrast boldly against the background of the dial, which on our tested model was blue (the watch is also available with a black or silver dial). The dial is decorated with the brand logo, model name and information about water resistance. The date is shown in a window at 3 o’clock. To accommodate this window and its frame, the numeral 15 on the 24-hour scale is shifted toward the center, and there is no hour index at the 3 o’clock position. Neither of these adjustments affects daytime or nighttime legibility. A similar format was used on the Colt Superocean from the 1990s.

The Colt has appealed to a wide audience for the past two decades with its robustness, functionality and excellent legibility. By replicating these features on the new Colt Automatic, Breitling will no doubt perpetuate its popularity.

Spartan HD GoCam Review

Wireless cameras seem to be the hardest thing to find. It is so unlikely that when a good one does pop up, everyone wants to check it out. The high priced Spartan HD GoCam is a good wireless camera that rivals other wireless cameras that are bound by a sim. Its great amount of customization will make it stand out of the mix of the everyday wireless models being created.

Style

Right out of the box, Spartan throws it in your face that the camera (for example: MOULTRIE PANORAMIC 180I ) is fully camo. The colors are deep, and they make for some great trail hunting hiding. Home users may be a little out of sorts when using it for security since it would stand out like a sore thumb. But that really isn’t a flaw since the wireless function allows you to place it anywhere and hide it.

Weight

Under a pound, this little unit is light with the only bulkiness coming from the antenna sticking out of the top left side of the unit. You can put this as high as you need and hang it without worry that it will drop and hit the ground. It’s small enough to fit in all of your hiding spots, but the antenna might limit some of those spots.

Recommended Level

Due to the easy setup options this wireless camera is one of the few that can be used by beginners. All level of users will benefit from using the Spartan HD GoCam, and the advanced users will instantly figure out some of the tricks of the trade with the wireless towers. The learning curve is very low, and any of the advanced features can be learned with trial and error.

Durability

Surprisingly strong even though it is compact, with the antenna having a little bit of give so that it isn’t automatically damaged if bent. The most important part of that is the antenna’s flexibility, since if that goes it just becomes a regular camera. You won’t have any worries about the way the camera handles bad conditions, as Spartan did a good job in securing the more important parts of the camera.

Pictures and Video

But who cares about the wireless if the pictures and the video are bad? Thankfully the camera is a strong 8MP that delivers great pictures in daytime and night. Video converts to 720p and is pretty dazzling. So no shortcuts were taken when designing the actual media portion of the camera, leaving you with a pretty good model even if it didn’t have the wireless capability.
Battery Usage

Now this is where it may get interesting for some, since the wireless radio is on 24/7. The 12AA batteries do take a hit from that, but it isn’t as bad as you may think. Solid power settings make sure the batteries last for months before being depleted, although it is important to only use brand names. No generics will fly if you want the full capabilities of this product, so plan accordingly.

Pros

There is no contract to sign when you want to use the wireless feature, and no sim card to install. It is a pay as you go service that works off of Verizon data plans. So you can activate, deactivate or reactivate at whatever time is most convenient for you.

The service can be activated directly from HCO, with simple step by step instructions included. Pictures can be moved wireless with or without encryption, letting the user decide if they want to protect their photos or not. You’ll get access to GoWireless, a premium web and mobile portal so that you can manage your camera and its contents.

Cons

Requires 12AA batteries that get burned alive in a couple of months, even with good power saving settings. Videos can’t be transmitted wirelessly, only photos. This has been a bane of wireless trail cameras for years and won’t change anytime soon. But it is a feature that is really missed when the camera is so capable of great videos.

Breaking the antenna can render the camera useless for wireless, so the antenna is just as important as the camera. Data plans may be too expensive for some users, but is optional. Yet with the premium price tag you’re paying for the camera, not using the wireless functions wouldn’t make any sense.

How Do People View It?

Customers love the ease of use when setting up the wireless functions. Some have talked about being able to get off of Verizon’s network and jumping to another sim-less provider with cheaper plans. Very few successfully did this, and the few that did love the conversion. It should be noted that it isn’t officially supported so you’d be on your own if you tried. Battery drain is a big subject being tossed around, and is a big issue with customers that are tired of buying new batteries. The suggested brand is Duracell or Energizer for the best compatibility.

Value

The pay as you go feature is a nice touch, and something that is wholly unexpected in this day and age where providers nickel and dime customers. The pay as you go model does have one problem, and that is its higher per data average than a normal plan. It is a double edged sword in that it is accessible to more people, but at a higher price. Wireless cameras are however hard to find of good quality, so by default this is a good value.

Lasting Appeal

Easily 10 years and counting with proper care. Not a lot of companies are stepping to the plate with wireless trail cameras. And Verizon is one of the biggest phone companies other than AT&T, making it an obvious 1-2 choice when it comes to making a compatible wireless trail camera. Unless someone comes along and makes a killer wireless trail camera, this is going to be a top 5 choice by default.

Rarity

There will pretty much be one available whenever someone wants to buy, as it is unlikely they will sell out. The price is high enough to scare away those not serious about trail hunting, so unless there is a major price drop it won’t be going anywhere. If more people figure out how to get multiple networks on it then expect it to fly off of shelves in no time.

Personal Opinion

The wireless craze has moved to trail cameras, and users only have a major choice of AT&T, Verizon or Sprint. These are the three companies that will be handling the wireless functions in trail cameras, and depending on where you live it will pay a big role in what camera you go with. The common sense approach is if Verizon isn’t in the coverage zone for where you’re trail hunting, then purchasing the Spartan HD GoCam is a bad idea. Do your homework before purchase and you’ll walk away with a real winner.

Understanding Your Check Stub

The test real pay stubs is principally established for employees who aren't able to access the direct deposit for each and every pay day. Organizations issue salaries/wages to their workers at fixed intervals in cooperation with their HR department. The HR problems sealed realpay stubs into the processing centre or the whole department. Every organization employs another paystub generator system. There is no defined sample format to get real check stubs to be followed by all organizations or organizations of the same type.

Check pay stub generator are issued to employees according to the character of the job. Organizations maintain a different and unique format for the skilled and unskilled employees, whereas there are a few limitations and specifications for the contractual and permanent employees.
realpay stubs

Mainly unskilled laborers are hired on wage-based system, while the skilled laborers are hired upon a well-structured remuneration package. Including various fringe benefits and a few deductions from the wages at fixed intervals. Typically, there are no deductions from the salaries of unskilled laborers.

Check paystub generator are preserved by the HR employees in conjunction with the finance department to ensure error free payroll. paystub generator of those salaried employees incorporate various deductions due to withholding federal taxes, social security, Medicare, employee benefit programs, employee share scheme, etc..

These deductions are made directly from the gross quantity of salary after which the resulting amount is your net income. This is the total and actual amount a worker takes back home and there aren't any further deductions. The check stub also has important information associated with a worker, such as, title, address, contact number, bank account number and business email address. Besides personal details, it clearly cites the gross salary for the time and the net revenue figure after deductions.

Many organizations that offer fringe benefits to senior employees also mention them in detail in their check stubs. These fringe benefits include home allowance, fuel at a particular pace, automobile allowance, annual bonuses, gratuity fund participation, cell phone allowance and other particulars. Not all organizations offer these fringe benefits to their workers, but it mostly depends on the financial scale of their organization.

Check create a pay stub are also widely used by the employees to secure loans from various financial institutions and inside the associations. Another form of these create pay stubs is called payroll warrants. This works just like a check and works through the traditional banking system. Employees refer to them as cover checks, but actually they aren't withdrawn against an employee checking accounts. This is stated only in relation to the similar working procedure of the paychecks.

Check paystub generator also ease employees to keep an eye on any changes in their deductibles, insurance coverage, leave entitlement, sick, holiday and overtime pay. This document should not only be kept inside the records of the organization but also with the employees to meet any discrepancies later on.

Create Pay Stubs - Employee's Need More Than Just a Check

When one owns a small business wardrobe which he or she is managing using a small number of individuals, there is often the attraction for you to produce his or her worker's income right from the consideration of the particular business wardrobe and let it beat that. It is an alternative ball game today considering that the workers of the present age could often consult their manager to generate real pay stub of any form. The reason behind their requesting this realpay stubs will be to help them to preserve a proper file of the revenue they create on the regular basis and also to additionally make certain that their workplace is spending them since it should be when it comes to services delivered. Additionally, it provides to make one aware of how much he's having to create pay stab in terms of fees.
create pay stub

What are what must be reflected on a paystub generator?

Everything depends on the laws governing a certain geographical area however it is essential that some necessary information should really be included in create pay stub. Some of the information needed contains how many hours the company's workers place in on a specific period of cost and then these hours are divided between regular and overtime hours of work. The real check stubs rate for a unique job type can be needed data. Space is made out somewhere on it where the workplace can place in the total gross amount for every employee for that real check stubs period.

Additional helpful information relating to the shape may be the breaks that were made from the employee's money. These deductions may address the people made before and following the fees, together with the taxes themselves. Areas will also be designed for completing the income taxes at national, state and the regional levels. Spaces for health care bills and social protection reductions should also be made around the check stubs.

How could one get a template to assist in developing check stubs?

If one really wants to produce create pay stubs for his / her employees, many possibilities and assets abound that your person can use to that particular influence. The progression in technology has definitely built it feasible for someone to find a solution to several dilemmas from searching the internet. There are several websites online that provide varied themes for generating create a pay stub, each format is different from the different with the goal of caring for company's desires.

Several of the necessary steps taken range from the manager registering to get a free account with that one website that will supply a format for developing check stubs. The workplace will be prompted to enter the particular year which he really wants to assess the cost as well as type in this state where her or his business is located. In the end this, the employer can then manage to calculate each boss's deductions by entering the individual's gross realpay stubs, his money and any other sum that should really be deducted and then simply clicking "assess", and the answer is granted there after which.

CHARGER CONTROLLER TYPES

Charge controls come in all shapes, sizes, features, and price ranges. They range from the small 4.5 amp (Sunguard) control, up to the 60 to 80 amp MPPT programmable controllers with computer interface. Often, if currents over 60 amps are required, two or more 40 to 80 amp units are wired in parallel. The most common controls used for all battery based systems are in the 4 to 60 amp range, but some of the new MPPT controls such as the Outback Power FlexMax go up to 80 amps.
Charge controls come in 3 general types (with some overlap):

Simple 1 or 2 stage controls which rely on relays or shunt transistors to control the voltage in one or two steps is RENOGY 40 AMP MPPT CHARGE CONTROLLER. These essentially just short or disconnect the solar panel when a certain voltage is reached. For all practical purposes these are dinosaurs, but you still see a few on old systems - and some of the super cheap ones for sale on the internet. Their only real claim to fame is their reliability - they have so few components, there is not much to break.

3-stage and/or PWM such Morningstar, Xantrex, Blue Sky, Steca, and many others. These are pretty much the industry standard now, but you will occasionally still see some of the older shunt/relay types around, such as in the very cheap systems offered by discounters and mass marketers.

Maximum power point tracking (MPPT), such as those made by Midnite Solar, Xantrex, Outback Power, Morningstar and others. These are the ultimate in controllers, with prices to match - but with efficiencies in the 94% to 98% range, they can save considerable money on larger systems since they provide 10 to 30% more power to the battery. For more information, see our article on MPPT.

Most controllers come with some kind of indicator, either a simple LED, a series of LED's, or digital meters. Many newer ones, such as the Outback Power, Midnite Classic, Morningstar MPPT, and others now have built in computer interfaces for monitoring and control. The simplest usually have only a couple of small LED lamps, which show that you have power and that you are getting some kind of charge. Most of those with meters will show both voltage and the current coming from the panels and the battery voltage. Some also show how much current is being pulled from the LOAD terminals.

All of the charge controllers that we stock are 3 stage PWM types, and the MPPT units. (in reality, "4-stage" is somewhat advertising hype - it used to be called equalize, but someone decided that 4 stage was better than 3). And now we even see one that is advertised as "5-stage"....

WHAT IS EQUALIZATION?

Equalization does somewhat what the name implies - it attempts to equalize - or make all cells in the battery or battery bank of exactly equal charge. Essentially it is a period of overcharge, usually in the 15 to 15.5 volt range. If you have some cells in the string lower than others, it will bring them all up to full capacity. In flooded batteries, it also serves the important function of stirring up the liquid in the batteries by causing gas bubbles. Of course, in an RV or boat, this does not usually do much for you unless you have been parked for months, as normal movement will accomplish the same thing. Also, in systems with small panels or oversized battery systems you may not get enough current to really do much bubbling. In many off-grid systems, batteries can also be equalized with a generator+charger.

WHAT IS PWM?

Quite a few charge controls have a "PWM" mode. PWM stands for Pulse Width Modulation. PWM is often used as one method of float charging. Instead of a steady output from the controller, it sends out a series of short charging pulses to the battery - a very rapid "on-off" switch. The controller constantly checks the state of the battery to determine how fast to send pulses, and how long (wide) the pulses will be. In a fully charged battery with no load, it may just "tick" every few seconds and send a short pulse to the battery. In a discharged battery, the pulses would be very long and almost continuous, or the controller may go into "full on" mode. The controller checks the state of charge on the battery between pulses and adjusts itself each time.

The downside to PWM is that it can also create interference in radios and TV's due to the sharp pulses that it generates. If you are having noise problems from your controller, see this page.

WHAT IS A LOAD, OR "LOW VOLTAGE DISCONNECT" OUTPUT?

Some controllers also have a "LOAD", or LVD output, which can be used for smaller loads, such as small appliances and lights. The advantage is that the load terminals have a low voltage disconnect, so it will turn off whatever is connected to the load terminals and keep from running the battery down too far. The LOAD output is often used for small non-critical loads, such as lights. A few, such as the Schneider Electric C12, can also be used as a lighting controller, to turn lights on at dark, but the Morningstar SLC lighting controller is usually a better choice for that. Do not use the LOAD output to run any but very small inverters. Inverters can have very high surge currents and may blow the controller.

Most systems do not need the LVD function - it can drive only smaller loads. Depending on the rating of the controller, this may be from 6 to 60 amps. You cannot run any but the smallest inverter from the LOAD output. On some controllers, such as the Morningstar SS series, the load output can be used to drive a heavy duty relay for load control, gen start etc. The LOAD or LVD output is most often used in RV & remote systems, such as camera, monitor, and cell phone sites where the load is small and the site is unattended.

WHAT ARE THE "SENSE" TERMINALS ON MY CONTROLLER?

Some charge controllers have a pair of "sense" terminals. Sense terminals carry very low current, around 1/10th of a milliamp at most, so there is no voltage drop. What it does is "look" at the battery voltage and compares it to what the controller is putting out. If there is a voltage drop between the charge controller and the battery, it will raise the controller output slightly to compensate.

These are only used when you have a long wire run between the controller and the battery. These wires carry no current, and can be pretty small - #20 to #16 AWG. We prefer to use #16 because it is not easily cut or squished accidentally. They attach to the SENSE terminals on the controller, and onto the same terminals as the two charging wires at the battery end.

WHAT IS A "BATTERY SYSTEM MONITOR"?

Battery system monitors, such as the Bogart Engineering TriMetric 2025A are not controllers. Instead, they monitor your battery system and give you a pretty good idea of your battery condition, and what you are using and generating. They keep track of the total amp-hours into and out of the batteries, and the battery state of charge, and other information. They can be very useful for medium to large systems for tracking exactly what your system is doing with various charging sources. They are somewhat overkill for small systems, but are kind of a fun toy if you want to see what every amp is doing :-). TriMetric's new PentaMetric model also has a computer interface and many other features.

For a complete list of all our charge controllers, to check pricing, or to order online, see our Charge Controller page on our web store. For battery monitors, meters, and shunts see our Meters & Monitors page there.

7 Tips for Starting a Food Business

Starting a food business has to be one of the most challenging businesses to get into. The harsh reality is that most fail within the first year. The restaurant business in notoriously tough, but where there is a will there is often a way! While vision and ambitions are important, turning that ambition into success requires research, planning, capital, business acumen, and perseverance, more research and more planning. Here are some tips that can help entrepreneurs start, operate, and grow their fast food business successfully and within the law.

Do Your Research

The food industry in general is very competitive so it is imperative that you do your research before getting started. Business networking events (such as those operated by Small Business Development Centers, SCORE, and local Chambers of Commerce) offer a great venue for picking the brains of fellow business people. Try to find out what works, what doesn't, and what they would do differently. If you are aware of restaurants that have failed, try to identify why. Online community forums are a great way of gauging market need and customer opinion about local food service businesses.

Doing your research will help you to define your target market, niche opportunity, and identify your greatest risk factors, so that you can build a strong business case and move forward. Whether it's specializing in authentic Chicago deep dish or cupcakes - focus on providing a unique and quality product - don't try to be all things to all people. Be specific!

Consider Starting Small

You should consider testing your idea before you go all out with a pop up location. It will give you an opportunity to run through your idea without all the risk. Many food businesses start as a hobby at home and once they outgrew the space they moved on to something bigger. Going straight from a business plan to the opening a storefront is a big step; the idea is that you have an opportunity to get the kinks out. You can rent a food truck for a month or try a local market just to see how things go. When you do finally make the move to permanent location you can scale up.

Alternatively, fast-food franchises might be an option worth considering for entrepreneurs who are not quite ready to make the leap into full business ownership.
Build a Business Plan

A business plan doesn't have to be an overly formalized document, but going through the process of building and constantly tweaking your plan will help you match the strengths of your business to the opportunities the market presents. It can also help you better deal with threats as they emerge.

A business plan is also essential when it comes to communicating with others - such as customers, partners, and investors - if you want any of these to believe in you, you must be able to convince them that you know what you are talking about when it comes to your business.
Get Financing

Not all businesses need investors to get started, particularly if you start small. However, there are ranges of options from very small microloans that can help smaller fast food outlets get started, to more comprehensive small business loans such as the popular SBA 7(a) and 504 loan programs.

If you are seeking investment, plan it out. Use your business plan and the knowledge you’ve gained from your pop up test as the basis for a loan proposal or investment plan. Investors and lenders will want to know everything about your business idea or venture. Also, be realistic about how much money you need. You can save lots of capital just by buying local produce and purchasing surplus equipment.
Start Your Business the Right Way
Whatever your business type, you must take care of the fundamental regulatory and legal steps involved in starting a business. From tax ID numbers to licensing make sure everything is in order.
Know Your Food Laws and Regulations
This should be part of your research to begin with, but it’s worth making it a one off tip. Know what the laws and regulations are in your state! From labor laws to food safety laws understanding and achieving compliance with legal and regulatory requirements can have a big effect on the success of a food operation big or small.
Find a Business Mentor

Talk to your local SBA office, SCORE, or Small Business Development Center (SBDC). They can give you unrivalled, objective, and FREE advice about the local market and the process of starting a successful business.
